Pedestrian and Tourist Accidents

Courtroom GavelPedestrian and Tourist Accidents occur often in a town like Miami, Florida.  Miami is full of many hot spots that are often walked or driven through by both residents and tourists alike. We are blessed with areas like South Beach, Miami Beach, Mid-Town, Wynwood, Coconut Grove and Miracle Mile.  Unfortunately, common sense indicates that when pedestrian traffic is mixed with vehicle traffic, more pedestrians will get injured or killed in accidents.  Common ways that pedestrians are struck by vehicles occur as a result of:

  • Drivers Distracted by Texting or other uses of their mobile phones
  • Drivers not completely stopping at red lights or stop signs and turning right without first looking for pedestrians walking to crosswalk
  • Drivers impaired by Alcohol and/or Drugs
  • Tourists unfamiliar with the area driving rental cars
  • Drivers grooming themselves while driving
  • Drivers eating/drinking while driving

Obviously, pedestrians struck by vehicles are much more likely to sustain bone fractures, traumatic brain injuries or other catastrophic personal injuries than when struck by a vehicle at the same speed. More importantly, according to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 235,666 Hit & Run Crashes from 2012-2014 – with the largest offenders by far occurring in Miami-Dade and Broward County – comprising of almost 78,000 of the Hit & Run Incidents.  Of those that involved fatalities, 50% of the fatalities were pedestrians.
